Clinical Informatics

Graduate Certificate

Clinical informatics uses information technology, computer science, and knowledge management to deliver safe and efficient healthcare services.

New government requirements for electronic health record adoption and utilization will create a shortage of qualified clinical leaders who truly understand information systems and how to implement them to decrease medical errors and adverse events, while improving overall quality and patient outcomes.

The one-year Clinical Informatics Certificate program is designed for licensed physicians, nurses, and other clinical health care professionals seeking leadership roles that leverage information systems to:

  • improve health care safety and quality.
  • maximize workflow efficiencies.
  • preserve user and patient satisfaction.

As a student in the program, you complete core courses in health informatics and health informatics standards and terminology. You also choose specialized courses covering such topics as project management, scientific and clinical data management, data analysis, consumer health informatics, business of health informatics, natural language processing, clinical information systems, and clinical decision support systems. A mentored practicum gives you the opportunity to synthesize course work and demonstrate competency in a real-world healthcare environment.

Upon successful completion of the certificate, you will be prepared to implement certified electronic health record systems.
