Music therapy is the use of music interventions to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication, or promote physical rehabilitation.

The IU Online Master of Science in Music Therapy provides professional board-certified music therapists with advanced research skills and clinical practice in music therapy. The music technology core includes principles of production using music technology, Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based music applications for composition and improvisation, and multimedia production, including visual and sound resources.

As a student in the program, you learn advanced research skills, enhancing your critical analysis and integration of current research findings into clinical practice. You also learn how to use the vast array of tools available in music technology to work with adults and children who have psychiatric disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, speech and hearing impairments, physical disabilities, and neurological impairments, among others.

Your IU Online MS in Music Therapy prepares you to work in hospitals, mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, daycare facilities, nursing homes, schools, and private practice in such careers as:

  • Director of music therapy 
  • Hospice music therapist 
  • Public school system music therapist

Degree Requirements 

To graduate with the MS in Music Therapy, you must complete 30 credit hours.
