Park and Public Lands Management, M.S.R.

Master of Science in Recreation

Indiana University's Master of Science in Recreation with a major in park and public lands management provides in-depth knowledge about recreation principles and management trends, and about issues related to managing parks, public lands, and associated resources. It is an executive-style graduate degree focused on returning students seeking new qualifications and new skills.

As a student in the program, you complete a minimum of 35 credit hours, including a minimum of 20 credit hours from the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies. You learn from faculty with professional experience managing organizations and agencies in the fields of parks, recreation, and protected areas.

Core courses cover the foundations of conservation, parks, and recreation; organizational leadership; administrative theory and management practices; strategic planning and management; strategic fundraising; policies; and ecosystem management.

The M.S.R. is a nonthesis track degree requiring a capstone project experience. Capstone projects are designed to integrate classroom education with an experiential learning component.

Potential careers after graduation include park and/or public land superintendent or manager, recreation and parks director, park compliance or environmental planner, and park and facility manager.
