Public Affairs, MPA

Master of Public Administration

The term "public affairs" is used to describe the vast range of policies, projects, and principles aimed at resolving important societal problems. The term "public servant" is used to describe individuals in government, nonprofit organizations, international organizations, consulting firms, and the private sector who engage in public affairs in order to serve the common good.

Typically, students interested in becoming public servants pursued either the Master of Public Administration, which prepares students for a management career in public service, or the Master of Public Policy, which prepares student to analyze and evaluate information to solve policy problems.

At Indiana University, we have combined those two programs into a versatile and marketable online degree program called Master of Public Affairs.

As a student in the program, you complete 48 credit hours of course work. Core courses include public management, statistical analysis, public management economics, law and public affairs, and public finance and budgeting. You also complete a capstone course that allows you to synthesize what you have learned throughout the program. In addition, you gain relevant experience through an internship or research project, or you demonstrate ways you have already gained experience through employment or volunteer service.

The M.P.A.'s interdisciplinary approach prepares you for a career in nonprofit management, policy analysis, public management, and more.
