The prevalence of psychoactive drugs, like opioid, methamphetamine, and alcohol, is reaching epidemic proportions with drug overdose now the leading cause of accidental death in the US. The result is a growing need for trained non-clinical professionals with sufficient knowledge of these drugs to refer individuals to agencies practicing evidence-based practices. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 23.2 percent employment growth, or roughly 23,800 jobs, for substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors between 2016 and 2026. In 2018, the US News & World Report ranked substance abuse related jobs #4 in Best Social Services Jobs.
