Cybersecurity Law and Policy

Graduate Certificate

Cybersecurity risks to consumer safety, democracy, and national security create a growing need for individuals with a formal background in cybersecurity law and policy to understand the current regulations and develop new cybersecurity law and policy frameworks in this ever-shifting field. To address these risks, society requires individuals with technological expertise and cybersecurity law and policy background to help establish the proper legal frameworks for responding to the ways in which technology is disrupting existing norms and creating new challenges.

The IU Online Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Law and Policy is uniquely positioned to answer these demands because of its interdisciplinary approach, integrating law, business, and computer science. As a student in the program, you study US federal and state laws and regulations and major judicial opinions concerning cybersecurity, as well as the major US federal and state regulators with responsibility for cybersecurity, their regulatory powers and jurisdiction, and other tools available to them.

You explore models of cybersecurity law in other parts of the world and their likely impact on US institutions. You learn to assess cybersecurity laws, regulations, and judicial decisions in terms of their impact on institutions and individuals, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and other legal or policy issues they might raise. You assess new technologies, applications, products, and services in terms of the cybersecurity issues they may present and their lawfulness under existing law. You also learn to understand the broader context in which cybersecurity issues occur and other values that are likely to be implicated by efforts to address cybersecurity challenges, including information privacy, freedom of expression and association, efficient commerce, and national security.

Your IU Online Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Law and Policy prepares you for such careers as:

  • Cybersecurity policy specialist
  • Security management specialist
  • Information security analyst
  • Computer and information systems manager
