Philanthropic Leadership, PhilD

Doctor of Philosophy

Different than a traditional PhD, which typically prepares graduates for academic positions, the Professional Doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership (PhilD) is for practicing professionals. 

This program focuses on applying new and existing research, scholarship, and data to produce actionable insights aimed at solving some of society's most intractable problems.

The program welcomes applicants with a wide range of experience from different fields, including:

  • Those with private and government sector experience
  • Those with philanthropic sector experience
  • Those who have acquired leadership positions through extensive volunteering
  • Those with a master’s or other graduate degree who want to explore philanthropic and nonprofit solutions to today’s biggest challenges.
Degree Requirements

To graduate with Professional Doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership, you must complete 48 credit hours.

Admissions

To be accepted to this program, you must have:
  • A completed graduate degree in any field (including, but not limited to; MA, MS, MPA, MPP, JD, MBA, MSW, and PhD)
  • At least five years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • A commitment to advancing social good, as evidenced by professional or personal endeavors
  • In addition to the requirements above, international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency for admission into IUPUI graduate and professional programs
