Certificate Overview

As a teacher pursuing the Graduate Certificate for Teaching English Learners, you will deepen your understanding of students' cultural and linguistic diversity. You’ll learn about second-language acquisition and development; the impact that personal, family, cultural, social, and sociopolitical factors have on language acquisition; and proven pedagogical strategies and tools that support language learning. You will become a leader in advocating for English Language learners and their families and in collaborating with other educators. 

This 100 percent online certificate prepares you to take the English Learner exam in Indiana and beyond.

To be accepted to the Graduate Certificate for Teaching English Learners, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Active teaching or emergency license or be a current student in a Transition to Teaching program

To apply to this program, submit an application that includes:

  • Official transcripts
  • Personal statement (250 words)
  • Teaching licensure information (one of the following):
    • Valid teaching or emergency license 
    • Letter from your school district indicating you are currently teaching on an emergency license
    • Transition to Teaching program admission email or letter, or memo from your academic advisor indicating your current student status in the program

This degree is available at IU East, IU Indianapolis, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend, and IU Southeast.

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English Learners prepares licensed teachers to offer instruction and support to pre-K–12 English Language Learners.

To earn the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English Learners, you must complete 18 credit hours.
